Party wings VS whole chicken wings
Party wings refer to the middle larger part of the chicken wings, also called wingette or flat (showcased in the photos of this post), while the whole chicken wings also include the tip and the drumette. Most grocery stores sell both party wings and whole chicken wings. If you buy from your local butcher, you can ask them to cut the whole wings for you to get party wings. The other two parts are great to throw in a chicken stock or to air fry too!
The reason why I like to use party wings for this recipe is because they're easier to eat as finger food and also optimize the space in the air fryer basket, but feel free to use the whole chicken wing if that's your preference.
Substitutions and variations
I love the combination of dry rub ingredients that I suggest. The mustard powder definitely adds a special touch to it that it's so tasty! But feel free to get creative with the spices you have in your pantry. Some ideas are below...
- Make them spicy: by adding a pinch of chili powder or cayenne pepper
- Use other dried herbs: like thyme, rosemary, or Italian herbs instead of oregano
- Add an Asian touch: adding curry powder or turmeric powder
- Use a store-bought rub: you might have an amazing blend of spices that you want to use instead, and that's completely fine too!
How to make this dry rub chicken wings recipe
Believe me when I say that preparing these keto air fryer dry rub wings is so easy! It takes minimal effort and time.
Start by preparing the dry rub seasoning
Add all the dry rub ingredients to a small bowl, and combine well with a little spoon or fork.
Pat dry & oil the wings
Pat dry the chicken wings using paper towels. This step is important to remove the moisture from the wings and helps to get crispy skin. It is a must for best results so don't skip it!
Once you've pat-dried all the wings, transfer them to a large tray or mixing bowl (I find a tray works better). Pour the extra virgin olive oil over them, and combine well making sure all the wings are coated with oil. You can spray them with extra virgin olive oil spray instead if you have it at home.
Toss dry rub
Toss half of the dry rub mixture over the chicken wings, doing your best to spread it along all the wings. Flip the wings and toss the other half of the dry rub. Ensure all the wings are coated with the dry rub.
Air fry chicken wings
Transfer the wings to the air fryer basket making a single layer of wings. Cook in batches if required, depending on how big your air fryer is. Cook at 200C/392F for 20 minutes, flipping the wings halfway through. The skin of the wings should be golden brown and the meat inside nice and tender.
*Please note that the cooking time might vary depending on your air fryer. Different air fryers have different power, hence it might take a bit longer to cook the wings.
Tip - It is important to make sure you cook the chicken wings on a single layer on the basket of the air fryer to get perfect crispy wings!!
Sauce ideas for serving
These crispy chicken wings are packed with flavor and delicious to be enjoyed by themselves or your favorite sauce.
They pair great with hot sauce for those liking a spicy touch. And for a homemade version try this Indonesian sambal sauce.
Tzatziki or savory coconut yogurt sauce works great too!
This homemade BBQ sauce for a classic and delicious sauce (please note this sauce has maple syrup and it's not keto, but you can substitute maple syrup for a keto-friendly sweetener)
Equipment
All you need to make these keto air fryer chicken wings with dry rub is...
- Small bowl and spoon to make the dry rub
- Paper towels to pat dry the skin of the wings
- Large bowl or tray to combine the wings with the dry rub
- Air fryer
Storage
Leftover wings or preparing ahead? No problem amigo, store the leftover wings in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. To reheat, simply reheat in the microwave for a couple of minutes or in the air fryer at 200C/392F for 5 minutes.
Top tip to make the best chicken wings!
To get perfect crispy wings it's a must to pat dry the wings with paper towels. This ensures excess moisture is removed, helping to get crispy skin.
Don't be shy with the amount of dry rub, coat them up baby! Be generous with the amount of dry rub to make these air fryer wings extra flavourful!
FAQ's
These dry rub wings have very little carbs. The chicken wings don't have carbs (they're fat and protein), and the dry rub contains a minimal amount of carbs, making this recipe keto-friendly.
Yes, chicken wings are perfect for a keto diet. Chicken wings themselves have no carbs, and the rub has minimal carbs (almost none!).
To get the dry seasoning to stick to the wings pat dry the chicken wings with paper towels, and then coat them in a little bit of olive oil. Then toss the dry rub over and the olive oil will help the dry rub stick to the skin, plus help to make the chicken wings crispier.
