Learn how to roast peppers in the air fryer to perfection, plus a super convenient and easy trick! Way quicker than roasting in the oven and SO GOOD! Vegan.

    Air fryer roasted bell peppers

I LOVE homemade roasted peppers! They are so delicious and convenient to have ready to go to add to salads, toast, or to serve as a healthy side dish.

Plus in this recipe, I am sharing my extra trick which is... that I love to throw some garlic cloves when roasting peppers. Roast garlic cloves are SO TASTY and perfect to spread on toast or mix with dressing.

    • Red bell peppers
    • Green bell peppers
    • Garlic cloves (optional but highly recommended!)
    • Extra virgin olive oil
    • Sea salt

What type of peppers can I use for this recipe?

You can use any type of pepper varieties for this recipe! Red peppers, green peppers, orange peppers, yellow bell peppers, poblano peppers, you name it!

Bear in mind that you might need a longer time to cook large peppers or shorter for smaller varieties like poblano pepper.

How to roast peppers in the air fryer

Preparing these air fryer peppers recipe couldn't be easier! With these step-by-step instructions, you will make roasted peppers like a pro!

halve the bell peppers and remove seeds and stem

Start by cutting the whole peppers in half. Remove the stem and seeds.

bell pepper halves brushed with olive oil and salt

Brush the sweet peppers with olive oil on both sides using a brush, and add a pinch of salt on the non-skin side.

bell pepper halves and garlic cloves in air fryer basket

Add the bell pepper halves to the air fryer basket with the skin facing down. Make sure to leave space between peppers. Add a few garlic cloves in the empty spaces. Cook at 200C for 10-30 minutes. Please note the cooking time can greatly vary from one air fryer to another. Always check 10 minutes after to see how the peppers are going.

They should have perfect charred edges when the time is up! YUM!!

    bell peppers with skin removed

Let them cool, and remove the skin of the pepper. And voila, they are ready!

Tip! Check how the peppers are roasting after 10 minutes.

Tip 2! The number of pepper halves that you can add to the air fryer basket will depend on your model! If you have a smaller air fryer you might only fit 2 halves.

How do you cut peppers after roasting?

You can cut the roasted peppers however it's going to be more convenient for you! I like to cut them in 1.5-2cm wide strips. They are great to add to salads or toast. You can also leave them in halves, and cut them to whatever size and shape is more suitable to the dish you are going to make.

What to do with roasted peppers

I love roasted bell peppers because they are super versatile! They pack a lot of flavor and are ideal to add to...

    • Salads or burrito bowls

    • Topping for tacos, with this melt-in-your-mouth slow cooker pork belly or for these easy chicken tacos.
    • Make a healthy vegetable side dish, dressing the bell peppers with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Sprinkle some red pepper flakes for a hot touch!

How long do homemade roast peppers last in the fridge?

Homemade roast peppers last 4-5 days in the fridge. Store in an airtight container or a bowl covered with compostable plastic wrap.

You can also marinate the roasted bell peppers in a jar with extra virgin olive oil. This will extend the life of the peppers up to 2 weeks.

Top tip to make the best air fryer bell peppers!

If you love roast peppers well roasted (i.e. with a nice soft texture) don't rush the cooking time! Please note the cooking time can widely vary from one air fryer to another. With the Baccarat The Healthy Fry 20 minutes will give you the perfect soft texture, the skin will come off super easy, and they will be deliciously sweet! I have also tried this recipe on a Ninja and took 15 minutes, and on a cheaper air fryer and took more like 25-30 minutes.

    Air fryer roast peppers FAQ's

Is it better to roast or fry peppers?

Roasted peppers are a lot healthier than fried peppers! They have less saturated fat content and the process is also a lot easier (and less messy!). Roast peppers have also the best flavor in my opinion, and I find they're sweeter too! The delicious smoky flavor is hard to beat!

Do you leave the skin on roasted peppers?

I recommend taking the skin off. It results in a nicer texture and it's a very easy process!

Do you roast peppers cut side up or down?

For this recipe, I recommend roasting the peppers with the skin facing down.

Do you wash peppers before roasting?

Yes, yes, yes!! You should always wash peppers before roasting. Especially if they are not organic! Washing the peppers will ensure you get rid of any pesticides that are sitting on the skin.

How long do roasted peppers last?

Roasted peppers can last 4-5 days in the fridge if stored in an air-tight container. Marinating the peppers in extra virgin olive oil is a great way to extend the life of the cooked peppers to up to 2 weeks.

I have never prepared peppers like this in the airfryer and it was a great success. I will definitely do it again!

Súper ricos, el toque del ajo es un plus. En mi caso tuve que bajar la potencia pero me quedaron genial y al guardarlo en aceite se conservan estupendamente en la nevera.

Recipe sounded good and probably is.
However, I tried cooking 6 x 1/2 sweet peppers in a Ninja Max for 20 minutes at 200 Degrees C.
They were burnt to a crisp!
The cooking time was excessive. Maybe 10 minutes is sufficient.

Hello Mike, thank you for sharing your experience! I'm sorry to hear that the recipe didn’t work out as expected for you. It sounds like your Ninja Max is exceptionally powerful, how good! 🙂 Cooking times can indeed vary widely between different air fryer models; some may take up to 30 minutes, while others require much less. I’ve now updated the post with a note about adjusting the cooking time based on the specific air fryer. I appreciate your feedback—it helps make the recipe even better. Thank you!

Would love to roast a few of these, but as a single person would I be able to freeze the peppers?

        Hi Sonia,

i have never frozen them myself but I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to. Alternatively I would recommend to store them in a jar filled with olive oil as I explain on the post. The last weeks like that and are super handy to have ready to go for salads, sandwiches, tacos, etc. Let me know how you go 😊

These turned out great! I typically use the oven to roast peppers but was hoping to avoid using it as we're in a terrible heat wave. This air fryer recipe is perfect! I blended the peppers into a pasta sauce afterwards! So yummy!

I just got an air fryer so I'm new to all this. Do I set it on bake, roast, or air fry to roast the peppers? I'm guessing roast.

Hello Moira! Most of the air fryers have the different settings with pre-set temperatures and cooking times. I would recommend trying with the air fry setting, and setting the temperature and time manually if required, as indicated in the post. Be aware that the power of the air fryer depends on the model so I always recommend checking after 10 minutes to see how the peppers are going. I would love to hear back from you to see how you went 😊 let me know if you have other questions!
