Who doesn't love a delicious smoothie during the warmer months? A cold smoothie is one of my go-to's for summer. They are super easy to prepare, and an easy way to pack a bunch of nutrients in a delicious drink. Plus making your own smoothies is much cheaper than buying them in smoothie places.

Why you will love this dairy-free tropical smoothie

Dairy-free tropical smoothie in a glass

This healthy recipe packs vibrant tropical flavors, is naturally sweet without added sugar, and super refreshing and hydrating! Enjoy the fresh taste of the tropics with every sip!

Nutrient powerhouse, this tropical smoothie is packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants from tropical fruits. It provides a nourishing boost for your body, supporting immunity, digestion, and overall wellness.

Super quick and easy to prepare! Blend and enjoy.

Gluten-free and dairy-free, it is perfect for those with lactose intolerance, dietary restrictions, or following a vegan diet. It offers a creamy texture and satisfying taste without the need for dairy milk or yogurt.

Thick and creamy, it is perfect to drink or have in a smoothie bowl format.

You can get creative with the fruit combination you use and use seasonal fruits available in your area.

    Ingredients

This vegan tropical smoothie is made with 4 simple ingredients:

Dairy-free tropical smoothie ingredients on bench
    • Banana
    • Mango
    • Papaya
    • Coconut water

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Substitutions and variations

    • Use different fruits like fresh pineapple, coconut, or passion fruit.
    • Plant-based milk can be used instead of coconut water. Coconut milk would be my preference, but almond milk or soy milk would work great too.
    • Fruit juices, like pineapple juice or fresh orange juice, can substitute the coconut water, be mindful of buying a juice that doesn't have added sugar.
    • Coconut cream or dairy-free yogurt are perfect additions to make the smoothie extra thick and creamy.
    • Protein powder is a great addition if you want to add a protein kick to this smoothie. Be mindful that it will change the natural flavor of the smoothie. Opt for plant-based proteins, as whey protein contains dairy products.

How to make this vegan tropical smoothie

Preparing this vegan smoothie couldn't be easier!

Frozen banana, mango and papaya for tropical smoothie

Start by cutting the fruit into chunks and freeze it. I like to buy fresh fruit and freeze it myself. However, feel free to buy frozen fruit directly if that's easier or more easily available to you. Big chunks (as per the photo) are fine.

Blender jug with frozen papaya, mango, banana, and coconut water

Add the frozen papaya, mango chunks, frozen banana, and coconut water to the blender, and blend until very smooth.

Blender jug pouring vegan tropical smoothie into glass

Serve in a smoothie glass and enjoy!

Tip: adjust the amount of coconut water (or liquid of choice) to make the texture of the smoothie more or less thick.

    Serving suggestions

You can enjoy this delicious creamy tropical smoothie in a glass or smoothie bowl.

When serving in a smoothie bowl format, I love to add some chia seeds, granola (like this turmeric granola, or this healthy chocolate granola), and some shredded or crispy coconut flakes. Fresh fruit also makes a great topping.

If you serve in a glass, you can put some toppings, like shredded coconut or fresh passion fruit.

    Tropical smoothie health benefits

Hand pouring shredded coconut on top of dairy free tropical smoothie

The combination of tropical fruits in this smoothie provides a variety of nutrients, hydration, and digestive support. It is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and it offers a nutrient-packed boost for your immune system and overall health.

Papaya is a rich source of vitamin C, folate, and antioxidants, promoting immune function and skin health while potentially reducing inflammation.

Mangoes contribute additional vitamin C, along with vitamin A and fiber, supporting eye health and digestion.

Bananas offer potassium, vitamin B6, and fiber, aiding in heart health, muscle function, and digestion regulation

Coconut water, prized for its electrolyte content, replenishes fluids and minerals, making it an ideal beverage for hydration and post-exercise recovery.

    Equipment

All you need to make this dairy free tropical smoothie is...

    • Sharp knife and chopping board - if you're freezing the fruit yourself.
    • A powerful blender. I love to use my Optimum G2.6 Slim from Froothie because it makes blending frozen fruit effortless. Use Alicia20 for $20 off.

    Storage

This smoothie is best consumed straightaway to enjoy the best texture and nutritional profile. However, you can make this smoothie ahead and store it in an airtight container in the fridge for 1-2 days. The fruit will oxidate after blending, so the flavor and color might slightly change after a few days.

You could also make ice cubes with the smoothie, and blend it later again.

Top tip to make the best creamy tropical smoothie!

The ratio of fruit VS coconut water (or liquid of choice) is crucial to achieve a thick and creamy texture. The more coconut water you add, the more runny the smoothie will be.
